Abstract
Abstract The performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was investigated using a carbon nanotube (CNT)-composited blend of medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates-co-polycaprolactone (PHA-co-PCL) as a surface coating on the anode electrode. A 1:1 (w/w) blend of PHA and PCL resulted in a material with enhanced thermal properties and efficient bacterial colonization on the anode surface. When composited with CNTs, this blend significantly improved electrochemical performance and reduced overall internal resistance by 81%. The blend composite anode demonstrated superior longevity and stability in generating maximum voltage, outperforming the control anode. The power and current densities, measured at 354 mW/m² and 768 mA/m² respectively, were 3.2 and 1.8 times higher than the control anode. Additionally, the blend composite resisted (bio)degradation even after 60 days of MFC operation.
