v1 - Enhanced performance of nanocomposite membrane developed on sulfonated poly 1 4-

Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine · 2011

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) have received a lot of interest and use metal-organic frameworks (MOF)/polymer nanocomposite membranes. Zeolite imidazole framework-90 (ZIF-90) was employed as an addition in the sulfonated poly (1, 4-phenylene ether-ether-sulfone) (SPEES) matrix in order to investigate the proton conductivity in a novel nanocomposite membrane made of SPEES/ ZIF. The high porosity, free surface, and presence of the aldehyde group in the ZIF-90 nanostructure have a substantial impact on enhancing the mechanical, chemical, thermal, and proton conductivity capabilities of the SPEES/ZIF-90 nanocomposite membranes. The results indicate that the utilization of SPEES/ZIF-90 nanocomposite membranes with 3wt% ZIF-90 resulted in enhanced proton conductivity of up to 160 mS/cm at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH). This is a significant improvement compared to the SPEES membrane which exhibited a proton conductivity of 55 mS/cm under the same conditions, indicating a 1.9-fold increase in performance. Furthermore, the SPEES/ZIF-90/3 membrane exhibited a remarkable 79% improvement in maximum power density, achieving a value of 0.52 W/cm 2 at 0.5 V and 98% RH, which is 79% higher than that of the pristine SPEES membrane.

Investigation of microbial fuel cell performance based on the nickel thin film m

Jing Zhu, Liangsheng Hu, Pengxiang Zhao et al.

Chemical Reviews · 2019

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a self-sustaining and environmentally friendly system for the simultaneous was tewater treatment and bioelectricity generation. The type and material of the electrode are critical factors that can influence the efficiency of this treatment process. In this study, graphite plates and carbon felt were modified through the electrodeposition of nickel followed by the formation of a biofilm, resulting in conductive bio-anode thin film electrodes with enhanced power generation capacity. The structural and morphological properties of the electrode surfaces were characterized using X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental mapping, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy techniques. Maximum voltage, current density, and power generation were investigated using a dual-chamber MFC equipped with a Nafion 117 membrane and bio-nickel-doped carbon felt (bio-Ni@CF) and bio-nickel-doped graphite plate (bio-Ni@GP) electrodes under constant temperature conditions. The polarization and power curves obtained using different anode electrodes revealed that the maximum voltage, power and current density achieved with the bio-Ni@CF electrode were 468.0 mV, 130.72 mW/m 2 and 760.0 mA/m 2 respectively. Moreover, the modified electrodes demonstrated appropriate stability and resistance during successful runs. These results suggest that nickel-doped carbon-based electrodes can serve as suitable and stable supported catalysts and conductors for improving efficiency and increasing power generation in MFCs.

s40643-021-00442-x - A novel fragmented anode biofilm microbial fuel cell FABMFC integrated system fo

· 0

The critical MFC design challenge is to increase anode surface area. A novel FAB-MFC integrated system was developed and evaluated for domestic wastewater treatment. It was operated in fed-batch flow mode at 1-3 days of HRT with 755 mg/L COD IN and 0.76 kg-COD/m 3 /day. The study includes anaerobic-MFC and aerobic-MFC integrated systems. Microbial electrode jacket dish (MEJ-dish) with hybrid dimension (HD) was invented, first time to authors' knowledge, to boost anode biofilm growth. The treatment system with MEJ+ (FAB) and MEJ- (MFC) anode are called FAB-MFC and MFC, respectively.

s12951-024-02577-3 - Electroactive Brevundimonas diminuta consortium mediated selenite bioreduction b

Ebtehag A.E. Sakr, Dena Z. Khater, K.M. El‐Khatib

Journal of Nanobiotechnology · 2024

In this study, highly selenite-resistant strains belonging to Brevundimonas diminuta (OK287021, OK287022) genus were isolated from previously operated single chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC). The central composite design showed that the B. diminuta consortium could reduce selenite. Under optimum conditions, 15.38 Log CFU mL -1 microbial growth, 99.08% Se(IV) reduction, and 89.94% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were observed. Moreover, the UV-visible spectroscopy (UV) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses confirmed the synthesis of elemental selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed the formation of SeNPs nano-spheres. Besides, the bioelectrochemical performance of B. diminuta in the SCMFC illustrated that the maximum power density was higher in the case of selenite SCMFCs than those of the sterile control SCMFCs. Additionally, the bioelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry characterization illustrated the production of definite extracellular redox mediators that might be involved in the electron transfer progression during the reduction of selenite. In conclusion, B. diminuta whose electrochemical activity has never previously been reported could be a suitable and robust biocatalyst for selenite bioreduction along with wastewater treatment, bioelectricity generation, and economical synthesis of SeNPs in MFCs.
